The latest from the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Canada. All times are Eastern:

England hangs on to defeat World Cup co-host Mexico 3-2, despite being outshot 21-6 (5-5 on target). Mexico had 12 corners and had 66 per cent of the ball possession. England advances to the quarterfinals and will meet Norway on Saturday in Miami.

10:58 p.m.

Mexico trails England 3-2 with five minutes remaining in second-half stoppage time and continues to push for the equalizer.

10:35 p.m.

The teams are taking their second-half hydration break, 20 minutes and change away from the end of regulation time.

With England leading 3-1 with 68 minutes played, Mexico has been awarded a penalty. Raul Jimenez scores to trim the co-hosts’ deficit to 3-2. Harry Kane had given England a 3-1 lead by converting a penalty kick in the 60th minute.

England takes a 2-1 lead into the halftime break at Mexico City. Mexico is outshooting England 8-3, with both sides having three shots on target. Mexico has had possession for 61 per cent of the time and have taken more fouls (8-3) but England has the lone yellow card.

Jude Bellingham, with his third goal of the World Cup, gives England a 1-0 lead with a goal in the 36th minute. Two minutes later, Bellingham scores again and England takes control at 2-0.

They’re ready to play in Mexico City after a one-hour weather delay. England and Mexico are on the pitch for their Round of 16 match at the World Cup.

The kickoff for the World Cup round of 16 match between Mexico and England has been delayed by one hour as a thunderstorm rolled through Estadio Azteca. This is the second time weather has disrupted El Tri’s tournament run; their round of 32 match against Ecuador on Tuesday was pushed back an hour due to similar conditions.

Erling Haaland scored in the 79th minute and two minutes into injury time as Norway ousted Brazil with a 2-1 win in the Round of 16. Neymar trimmed the deficit for Brazil with a penalty kick 11 minutes into injury time.

Norway and Brazil are knotted at 0-0 at halftime.

Brazil and Norway have kicked off their Round of 16 match in East Rutherford, N.J.

United States forward Folarin Balogun has had his one-game ban suspended by FIFA, allowing him to play in the country’s game against Belgium in the Round of 16 on Monday. Balogun, who leads the Americans with three goals, was shown a red card in his side’s 2-0 win over Bosnia-Herzegovina on Wednesday in the Round of 32. A red card comes with an automatic one-match suspension.
