Pet owners urged to be prepared in case of major wildfire events

With dry, hot conditions already felt in the Okanagan, the B.C. SPCA is urging pet owners be prepared in case a wildfire does spark.

The agency said the unseasonably dry and warm weather have led to many British Columbians being wary of wildfires this summer, and have put forward some tips so people could ensure the safety of their furry companion in case they have to evacuate.

The SPCA advises to have a pet specific grab-and-go bag packed and ready with enough food, water and medication to last one to two weeks, as well as other essential items like copies of vaccination records and proof of ownership documents

  • Ensure pets are familiarized with being in a crate, kennel or carrier
  • Ensure a pet’s identification is up to date by double checking a pet’s microchip or tattoo registry and confirming their listed information is correct
  • Have an emergency contact available as a backup to pick up and transport a pet in the case of an evacuation order being issued

The B.C. SPCA also said it offers support for animals in need such as free food and supplies from their pet food banks, and emergency boarding for people ordered to evacuate but unable to take their pets with them.

During the 2023 wildfire season, the SCPA fielded 380 emergency-related calls, cared for 200 evacuated animals, checked in on 240 animals in-field, and gave away over 450 kilograms of food in just the Okanagan and Shuswap regions.
