A milestone has been hit in enhancing local mental health services thanks to a major contributor.

Vernon Jubilee Hospital (VJH) Foundation committed to donating $500,000 towards Foundry North Okanagan.

Operated by the Vernon and District branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA Vernon), Foundry will provide a range of barrier-free mental health, substance use and wellness services and programs for youth and young adults aged 12 to 24.

“This year, our board affirmed a strategic commitment to work with other organizations and find creative solutions to address the most pressing gaps in healthcare,” Kate McBrearty, executive director of VJH Foundation, said.

“We know that the needs of youth are escalating. That’s why we’ve chosen to invest in Foundry North Okanagan, to ensure timely care is available for youth when they need it most.”

CMHA Vernon said 70 per cent of mental health issues begin before the age of 18, and Foundry would work with those affected youth to help them address their struggles by bringing together mental health counselling, substance use health supports, primary care, peer support, and wraparound services in one location. Those services would also be offered free of charge and without the need for referral, and the agency noted this could improve youth health outcomes across the North Okanagan and take pressure off the hospital.

“These critical projects will work together to provide a robust continuum of mental healthcare for youth in our region,” McBrearty added.

“Our Foundation is honoured to partner with CMHA Vernon to bring this project to life.”

CMHA said Foundry was expected to cost $8.5-million to develop and launch, and with the VJH Foundation contribution, the organization had already raised $4.9-million toward their goal.

“This is a powerful example of what’s possible when our community comes together around a shared vision,” Julia Payson, executive director of CMHA Vernon, stated.

“By partnering with VJH Foundation and others, we are building an integrated, accessible system of care that will support young people and families in a meaningful and lasting way. We are deeply grateful to be part of a collaborative effort that brings hope and support closer to those who need it most.”

CMHA Vernon expected Foundry North Okanagan to be ready and open in the spring of 2026, though a more specific timeline was not provided.
