Kelowna RCMP warn of rising fraud cases involving impersonation scams

Kelowna RCMP are warning residents to stay vigilant after a rise in fraud cases involving scammers posing as government officials, financial institutions and law enforcement.

Police say the suspects are using spoofed phone numbers to appear legitimate and are pressuring victims with urgent claims designed to create panic and force quick action. In many cases, victims are being told to transfer money, purchase gift cards or arrange cash drops.

RCMP say the tactics are designed to isolate individuals and prevent them from verifying the legitimacy of the request. Investigators are reminding the public that legitimate agencies will not demand immediate payment or ask for money through gift cards or third parties.

Officials are urging anyone who receives suspicious calls or messages to hang up and contact the organization directly using verified contact information.
