Theatre Request Still Under Discussion

Jan 26, 2017 | 1:27 PM

A request for funding from Vernon council for an event this summer, will get more discussion.

Theatre BC is looking for $5,000 to help put-out its Mainstage 2017 Festival at the Performing Arts Festival.

Mayor Akbal Mund would like to see the city support it.

“Even though it’s during Funtastic, that doesn’t matter. There is going to be an extra four or five thousand people in town. Why not tell them that something else is going on besides playing ball? They can go see some arts and culture,” Mund told Kiss FM.

The city’s tourism advisory committee will review the request, and make a recommendation to council.

Councillor Catherine Lord supports the grant, partly because it will provide student workshops for theatre.

“Which is perfect because that’s not something we always have here, and there are a lot of students here who are interested in theatre,” says Lord.

Lord is not sure if the tourism committee will support the request.

“All the hotels are full that weekend, so its not going to benefit them that much, so I can easily see them saying no in this case.”

Lord says even if the committee rejects it, the request will come back to council for a final decision

The event, which features the best of BC community theatre productions, will be held June 30 to July 8.
