Bail revoked for repeat Kelowna offender

A Kelowna court has revoked the bail of a chronic repeat offender accused of multiple crimes in the downtown.

Curtis McNaught is currently facing five separate cases involving multiple counts of break and enter, theft, mischief, and possession of stolen property.

The alleged offences all happened over the last six months, and most of them in January this year.

McNaught’s bail, granted following alleged offences in July and again last month, has now been revoked and he will remain in custody.

There has been a widespread call for bail reform in Canada with repeat offenders causing a disproportionate amount of crime and damage, especially in smaller communities.

The B.C. Crown Prosecution Service said McNaught’s next appearance on these two files as well as another, will be Feb. 17, for an arraignment hearing.

Earlier this week, Kelowna mayor Tom Dyas appeared before a federal committee in Ottawa to speak in favor of Bill C-14. The bill is aimed at tightening bail for property crimes.

Speaking to the committee, Dyas cited examples of repeat offenders in Kelowna who rack up dozens of police files while continuing to commit crimes after release.

The legislation would require some accused individuals to justify why they should be granted bail, rather than prosecutors proving why they should not.
