Craftsmanship, Community & Care: Parsons Family Homes Turns 50

Jul 16, 2025 | 10:49 AM

Homebuilding is more than a career for Taylor Parsons of Parsons Family Homes. It’s a legacy. Celebrating 50 years in business, the local building company was started in 1975 by his father. Taylor grew up immersed in the trade and the stylish creativity of his mother, who was an interior designer.

Along with building countless homes in the Vernon area, his father also made many custom playhouses for charity auctions that supported BC Children’s Hospital. It was an example of how every project, no matter the size, deserved quality craftsmanship.

That philosophy continues in Taylor’s approach and drives his commitment to community. One of the highlights of his own career is building a guest house for the Mackie Lake House Foundation. The non-profit heritage site uses the new guest house as a rental property.

“It provides an income for the nonprofit organization to keep the property maintained,” Taylor shared. “And it’s the only heritage house in Coldstream, so from my perspective that’s probably my biggest contribution to date as far as the community and leaving my mark.”

Working with award-winning Kelowna architect Richard Hewitt is another highlight. Taylor modestly mentioned his four Tommie Awards (now called the Okanagan Housing Awards of Excellence) from his time bringing the architect’s vision to life.

Today’s projects range from full custom builds to finishing carpentry, framing, and detail work. He even takes on some jobs that are much smaller. While the jobs vary in size, the standard never changes. Whether he’s managing a complete new build or stepping in to install baseboards, the care and craftsmanship remain the same.

One of the most valuable services Parsons Family Homes offers happens before the first board is cut. “In the planning stage, there’s just so much money to be saved there,” he explained.

Taylor encourages clients to involve him as early as possible, ideally while the plans are still being developed. Sometimes it’s even before a site is purchased. He works with clients to find a lot that fits the home they envision rather than needing to make the house fit well on a lot. “It just really helps make the build so efficient.”

Looking ahead, Parsons Family Homes continues to grow through word of mouth, referrals, and the strength of reputation. With roots in family and community, and a future built on integrity and attention to detail, Taylor’s work continues to speak for itself – one home at a time.
