Vernon Search and Rescue warns of water hazards after tires removed from the lake

The local search and rescue society is warning that tires left in the water can pose a risk to the public.

Vernon Search and Rescue (VSAR) said in a social media post that volunteer members were on Okanagan Lake doing on-water training over the weekend of June 21, when they came upon partially-visible, semi-submerged hazards.

“Drawing close, it was discovered to be a number of tires all tied together, floating just barely at the surface level,” VSAR said in the post.

“This submerged hazard would be extremely dangerous if hit at speed by any vessel, such as a high-speed personal watercraft or a ski boat towing a waterskier or wakeboarder.”

The tires were brought aboard and removed from the lake.

VSAR issued a reminded for people to be vigilant for unexpected hazards, and to leave the area and environment cleaner than how they found it.
