Outreach teams to support B.C. students with diverse needs

Students in British Columbia with disabilities and diverse abilities have more supports in the classroom.

The province announced that a second Provincial School Outreach team will be established to directly support students through in-person and online services.

“When children with disabilities and diverse abilities are well-supported, they may feel more included at school and experience big improvements in their self-esteem, mental health and well-being,” Rachna Singh, Minister of Education and Child Care, said.

“We know from school districts that this initiative is making a difference for families by making sure students in smaller communities have access to specialists to support their individual learning and development.”

The team will be comprised of a school psychologist, occupational therapist, learning resource teacher, behaviour specialists, and speech-language pathologists. These specialists will connect students to a range of services, and will also provide professional development opportunities for teachers and staff so they better understand how to meet students’ needs and can plan for ongoing services for students.

The team will travel to different schools throughout B.C. to provide supports where the needs are highest, with the province stating a special focus will be put on smaller and more remote communities.

“A second Provincial School Outreach team is going to greatly benefit children with disabilities and diverse abilities in under-served school districts,” Grace Lore, Minister of Children and Family Development, said.

“From helping to improve their communication and motor skills, to increasing their independence, to strengthening their social skills and academic performance, these supports will help make school a more inclusive and welcoming place.”

The second outreach team is expected to take on their duties at the start of the 2024-25 school year.

The province’s first team was launched in 2023, and over that school year the team provided support to 30 schools in 18 districts, with more than 50 per cent of their work done in-person in rural and remote districts.
