Apr 11, 2024 | 12:00 PM

The Greater Vernon area saw deaths in the first quarter of the year decline on an annual basis.

Preliminary data from Vital Statistics shows there were a total of 186 deaths in the Vernon/Coldstream area in the first three months of 2024.

That was down from 213 in the first quarter of 2023. It was also down from the 208 reported in Q4 of last year.

The deaths this year involved 69 in January, 64 in February, and 53 in March. The figures for January and March were down from the previous year’s 79 and 77, respectively, though the deaths in February were up from the 57 recorded during the same month the year prior.

The trend of declining deaths was seen elsewhere in the North Okanagan during the first three months of the year as well.

The North Okanagan/Lumby community health service area reported 41 deaths in Q1, down slightly from 42 during the same period of 2023.

Armstrong/Spallumcheen saw 21 people die in the first three months of the year, down from 31 deaths in Q1 last year.

There were also 27 deaths in Enderby, marking a decline from the 33 deaths recorded in the first three months of 2023.

Vital Statistics did not disclose causes of deaths in its report.
