Fire hall breaking tradition with pre-Halloween fireworks

A number of local fire departments will be presenting fireworks on Halloween night next Tuesday, but one has decided to try out something new, which apparently is not sitting well with some residents.

The Lavington Fire Hall is holding its fireworks on Saturday, Oct. 28.

“It’s caused a bit of a stir on the Lavington area with some local residents upset we have broken tradition of having it on Halloween,” Aaron Barrie, a volunteer with the fire department, said in an email to Vernon Matters/Beach Radio.

Barrie said the new date has several advantages, which he lists below:

fire hall members don’t have to take time off work to set up and monitor the fireworks
fire hall members can go trick or treating with their kids on Halloween
many people don’t have to work Sunday so they can have a good time
it’s a great start to Halloween party night

Barrie said they are hoping to have a great turnout as they won’t be competing with the Lumby/Coldstream/BX halls on Halloween.

The event in Lavington at Jeffers Park, near the fire hall, will begin with food at 6:30 p.m. and the fireworks at 8 p.m.

Hotdogs, hamburgers, chili, hot chocolate and pop will be available by donation, with all funds going to the fireworks show.

All other local fireworks shows, such as in BX-Swan Lake (by fire hall), Coldstream (Kal Beach) and Enderby (Riverside Park) will be on Tuesday, Oct. 31.
