A family of five was involved in a scary crash north of Vernon Friday afternoon.

A pickup truck was crossing from Highland Road to L&A Cross Road just before 1 p.m. on Aug. 4 when it collided with the family’s vehicle which was headed south on Highway 97.

Armstrong-Spallumcheen fire chief Ian Cummings said the people involved were fortunate to escape serious injuries.

“The van went off the road, over the bank and into the ditch. There was a family of five: three young children and two adults. Luckily, there was just very minor injuries. You can thank the new construction of vehicles and air bags for that,” Cummings told Vernon Matters.

The fire chief said the truck driver was not injured.

BC Emergency Health Services’ paramedics assessed six patients at the scene but did not transport any patients to hospital.

Cummings said there was a lot of traffic on the highway, but the incident only caused minor delays.

RCMP also attended the scene.

“Police were notified of a two vehicle collision at the intersection of Highway 97 and Highland Road north of Vernon. A pickup truck, stopped on Highland Road, attempted to enter the highway and struck the front corner of a Nissan Pathfinder that was travelling through the intersection on Highway 97. Minor injuries were reported as a result of the collision,” Const. Chris Terleski told Vernon Matters.

The BX-Swan Lake Fire Department also responded and helped out with the incident.
