The program that helps feed local school children has reached a milestone year, and is continuing its ask for support from the public.

The North Okanagan Starfish Program, managed by the Kalamalka Starfish Society, has entered its 10th year of providing local school children with bags containing healthy and nutritious meals so they can stay fed through the weekends.

The program currently supports 240 children a week across the North Okanagan, helping offset the families’ food insecurity and making sure the kids are well fed and ready to learn when back in the classroom.

“These bags don’t just fill stomachs—they lift spirits and help children return to class each Monday ready to learn, grow, and thrive,” Mary Jackson, President of the Kalamalka Starfish Society, said.

The group also noted that, over the previous four school years, the program delivered a combined 23,000 bags of food, equivalent to 140,000 meals, to hungry kids in the North Okanagan.

“It takes a community to deliver this program,” Darryl O’Brian, Vice-President of the Society, noted.

“We’re grateful for the ongoing support of Save-On-Foods Village Green, Keith Construction, Kalamalka Rotary, Wayside Press, School District 22, School District 83, and our 40-plus volunteers who sort food, pack bags, and ensure timely delivery.”
