Locals among winners of provincial GoByBike prizes

Jun 20, 2023 | 3:30 PM

Three cyclists from Vernon and the North Okanagan are taking home provincial prizes after participating in GoByBike week.

Becky Stamile has been named one of two winners of an Avenue Sleek commuter e-bike, courtesy of Pedego Electric Bikes. That was the top prize for the provincial program aimed at getting people to ride bikes, excluding the grand prize of a cycling trip for two to Croatia.

Amber Arnold won a Monsoon Oceanweave 9+ waterproof handlebar bag, courtesy of Axiom cycling gear. Other winners of that gear were Trevor Aitkin and Nitasha Prem Kumar of Kelowna.

Shannon Daniels of Vernon won a “Let’s Go Biking” e-book.

The winners have all been individually emailed to confirm their prizes, and people are encouraged to check their spam folders for any missed emails.

The grand prize winner will be announced at a later date.

All together, 41,037 British Columbians logged over 1.4 million kilometres during the GoByBike Spring 2023 edition. That marked a 21 per cent increase in kilometres traveled compared to the same week in 2022.

The rides equated to 304,172 kilograms of greenhouse gas saved during the week, which was also up 21 per cent compared to GHG savings in the 2022 Spring GoByBike Week.

GoByBike Week organizers noted they had a 10 per cent increase in participants compared to the 2022 edition, a 32 per cent increase in first time participants.

There were also 4,242 teams registered across B.C. for the 2023 Spring GoByBike Week.

Cyclists who participated in the 2023 event but did not have their names drawn can still win a prize. A participant survey is open online until 11:59 p.m. June 30, and people who fill out the survey will be entered into a draw for a $100 Amazon e-gift card.
