UPDATE: Speed believed to be factor in highway crash

Jun 12, 2023 | 11:29 AM

UPDATE 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 13:

A crash on Highway 97 south of Vernon Monday morning sent one person to hospital.

Const. Chris Terleski with the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP told Vernon Matters that “speed is believed to have been a factor in the collision” after dispatch reports said the subject car was travelling at approximately 140 km/h.

The local Mountie confirmed officers attended the scene between Oyama and the Predator Ridge turnoff (Bailey Road) after reports of the crash came in at 11:15 a.m. June 12.

Police say a small blue Subaru passenger car lost control and overturned, coming to a rest in a ditch beside the highway.

Terleski stated the driver and lone occupant of the vehicle was transported to hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

UPDATE: 4:00 p.m.

A crash on the highway south of Vernon Monday morning (June 12) saw a car come in contact with the centre median, roll, go off the highway and end up in the southbound ditch.

Despite that, the driver and lone occupant suffered only minor injuries in the incident that took place just inside Lake Country’s boundary around 11:15 a.m.

Dispatch reports said the vehicle was travelling at “140 km/h” at the time of the crash, which a member of the Lake Country Fire Department could not confirm.

“The car made contact with the centre median and rode the median for a while, so whether speed was a factor, I’m not 100 per cent sure,” Kynan O’ Rourke, deputy fire chief for Lake Country, told Vernon Matters.

“RCMP may be able to answer that. They did lose control after they came came off the centre median and it did roll over.”

Vernon Fire Rescue also responded as it was near the border of the two fire coverage areas.

Another incident north of Vernon this afternoon saw some items fall from a truck onto Highway 97, causing a rear-ender near the weigh scales, with minor injuries and two vehicles towed from the scene.
