Restructuring Set For Enderby Schools

May 16, 2017 | 6:22 AM

After much debate, parents in Enderby now know how overcrowding in M.V. Beattie Elementary school will be dealt with.

Official Trustee Mike McKay has agreed to 11 recommendations from School District 83 staff.

Chief among them is that It will become K to 6 and grade seven students will move to A.L Fortune.

McKay says several other secondary schools in the province have grades 7 to 12

” And what we have learned and are satisfied with is that with good planning and a good culture, structure and environment, those students will do well. That’s what’s happening in those other places.”

He adds that resources will be made available to A.L. Fortune to ensure a beneficial integration of grade seven students.

The move means only one portable will be added to M.V. Beattie instead of three.

One option instead of moving students was to bring in three portable classrooms.

” That would not have dealt with the space issues the district and the school has for all of the other services, the ancillary services, gym space, library, etc, etc.”

McKay says more would take away from programs and services.

“And I’ve heard from people who said please don’t use all of the available funds to bring in several portables, over half a million dollars worth of portables, which would impact a number of programs and services for our kids because the resourcing in the district has to serve everyone in the district.”

As well, a capital plan is to be developed and reviewed each fall for an addition to Beattie if it projected to have no space for future enrollment.

Also, students already going to M.V. Beattie from outside the catchment area will continue to do so, but the catchment will be closed to cross boundary students for the foreseeable future.

Other recommendations approved include a shuttle bus from Enderby to Grindrod be instituted along with an express-like bus from Ashton Creek to Grindrod, that all M.V. Beattie catchment students are give a priority choice for registration at A.L. Fortune or Grindrod Elementary..
