Missing Skiers Located

Jan 25, 2017 | 8:53 AM

A group of five skiers from the Vernon-Silver Star area who went missing last night after failing to return from a day at Revelstoke Resort have been found.

Revelstoke RCMP Staff Sgt. Kurt Grubinsky says the call about them not showing up back home came in last night.

“They were out of bounds, they were lost and by about midnight last night they made their way to one of the huts back in-bounds. The operations arm of the resort was able to locate them and transport them down the hill to safety.”

Grubinsky says it’s becoming common for people to get lost from the resort.

“A lot of people use the Resort to access the back-country. They will take the lifts up and then they will ski out to the out of bounds areas and that is when sometimes they get lost, or get into avalanches or they get into trouble.”

Grubinsky says it’s easier to try to locate people if they leave a tentative plan with someone they know.

“Sometimes they are able to use their cell phones to get a signal out. Often what we are doing is going off information that people that know them, they’ve told a spouse or friend where they will be skiing in a certain area, at least that gives us a starting point.”

Revelstoke Search & Rescue also was searching for a lone back-country skier who also went missing yesterday. That man was found this morning and is in good condition.
