Vernon RCMP investigate assault in residential building

Dec 28, 2022 | 10:02 AM

Vernon North Okanagan RCMP has launched an investigation into an alleged assault by a stranger that took place inside a residential building.

Mounties responded to the scene in the 3300 block of 35th Avenue in Vernon at approximately 11 p.m. Friday, Dec. 23.

Police say the female victim had been in an elevator with an unknown man who asked for money and a place to stay.

She refused and the suspect became angry and punched the victim several times.

The victim, a 55-year-old woman, was taken to hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

“An unprovoked assault like this is incredibly concerning,” Const. Chris Terleski, media relations officer for the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP said.

“Beyond any physical injuries, the emotional trauma alone the victim experienced is unsettling and the person responsible for this crime needs to be held accountable for their actions. We’re reaching out to the public for their help with the hope someone with information about this individual will come forward to speak to us,” Terleski said.

The suspect is described as a tall, Caucasian male. He had a muscular build, dark brown hair, and a “scraggly” beard. He was wearing a dark hoodie and boots at the time of the assault.

Anyone with information relating to the assault or the suspect is asked to contact the local RCMP at 250-545-7171 or to submit an anonymous tip to Crime Stoppers online or at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
