10:15 am update:

The Okanagan Indian Band has lifted an evacuation order issued Tuesday night, affecting residents at Parker’s Cove along Westside Road.

About 100 homes were issued evacuation orders late Tuesday night, due to a log jam on Whiteman’s Creek, creating flooding concerns.

About 70 residents checked into a reception centre at the Vernon Curling Club for the evacuees.

Band Chief Byron Louis is thanking the response to the emergency
“We would like to thank the concerted efforts of our neighbouring communities for mobilizing emergency services and resources which assisted us to ensure the safety of our community members,” says Louis.

Residents are encouraged to continue to check the band’s website at www.okib.ca for the most current updates as OKIB continues to monitor the area for potential flood hazard over the next few days.

9:30 am update:

Dozens of people were forced to leave their homes in the Parker Cove area of the Okanagan Indian Band Tuesday night.

A large log caused a jam on Whiteman’s Creek, creating flooding concerns for about 100 homes.

An emergency reception centre was opened at the Vernon Curling Club Tuesday night, where about 70 evacuees were provided services.

The rest are believed to have stayed with friends or relatives.

Reports say the jam on the creek has been cleared and the evacuees will be able to return to their homes by Thursday.

Vernon ESS and the Red Cross worked jointly to provide essential service to those displaced by the evacuation.
“Exceptional communication and cooperation between the reception center and the Okanagan Indian Band ensured that evacuees were quickly provided lodging in local hotels,” says a City release. “Those affected by the event expressed gratitude to reception center workers.”

Residents of Parker’s Cove are being ordered to evacuate during the removal of a large log jam at Whiteman’s Creek.

The Okanagan Indian Band is working with other resources to try to clear that jam.

It is about 200 metres north of the bridge over the creek off Westside Road on band land.

It is severe enough to cause the potential for flooding and Parker’s Cove is in what is considered the Direct Impact Zone.

Residents affected are on all of Falcon Avenue and Grouse Avenue beginning around Argali Street to Cougar Street.

An Emergency Reception Centre has been opened for the residents at the Vernon Curling Rink

at 3400 39th Avenue.
