Civic Memorial Park work ongoing, despite complications

Jul 18, 2022 | 6:30 AM

Vernon’s Civic Memorial Park has faced some challenges lately, but the work to build the new greenspace is ongoing.

An administration report to Vernon city council states that one or more people allegedly got onto the site, despite it being surrounded by construction fencing, and slashed the fabric cover of the balloon feature.

The report did not state when the vandalism occurred, or how much it would cost to repair the damage.

Meanwhile, construction of the new park has faced some complications.

Administration reported some supply chain issues delayed the delivery of items for the park, but work is underway to remedy that situation.

The proposed meadow area will be covered in normal turf after a quote came in at twice the budgeted amount.

Sierra Landscaping Ltd., the contractor doing the rest of the work on the park, is expected to submit a quote for the additional quantities and time required to create the natural meadow. Administration expects the work will cost less through the existing contractor than through a specialist.

The design work for the park is also ongoing.

No date is mentioned in the report as to an actual opening date. The report will be presented to council at the regular meeting Monday, July 18.

The park is located on 37th Avenue, site of the former Civic Arena which was torn down in 2018.
