Vernon calling on province to continue supporting climate action projects

May 13, 2026 | 6:00 AM

The City of Vernon will advocate that the province to continue funding climate action projects across B.C.

The province plans to stop funding the Local Government Climate Action Program (LGCP) under the incoming budget, much to the dismay of one Vernon City Councillor.

“This LGCAP funding is the primary source that we use to implement our Climate Action Plan and deliver the outreach strategy that we’re engaged in,” Councillor Brian Guy stated during the regular meeting Monday, May 11.

“Without this funding, which at last date that I have was 2024 and was $601,000 that we got from the province, without this we would have to drastically cut back on our climate action efforts and we would lose the Climate Action Coordinator position, the person that leads this community outreach strategy. It would be a significant hit and it would be much harder to encourage the building of resilience to extreme weather throughout the city and to reach out greenhouse gas reduction targets we’ve committed to in our climate plan.”

Guy added funding in Vernon’s reserves could support climate action projects for about a year and a half, but after that the city would not be able to support any new projects without finding funding from some other source.

Council tasked Mayor Victor Cumming with writing a letter to the B.C. government advocating for funding to the LGCAP be maintained and used to support projects locally and across the province.
