Kelowna is one month away from hosting more than 3,000 athletes, coaches and officials as preparations intensify for the 2026 BC Summer Games.

A report going before council today says the multi-sport event, running July 22 to 26, will feature 19 sports and bring participants from across the province, along with more than 2,500 volunteers supporting operations.

Athletes are scheduled to arrive July 22, with opening ceremonies planned for July 23 at Prospera Place. Competition will run from July 24 to 26 at venues across the city.

According to the report, core planning is now in place and the focus has shifted to final testing, coordination and operational readiness. Venue preparation is underway, while accommodation, food and transportation planning are in advanced stages and being finalized.

The opening ceremony and protocol planning are ongoing, alongside detailed work on medical services, logistics, access control and communications.

The report says final-month priorities include volunteer assignment and confirmation, venue readiness testing, participant services, community awareness and risk management.

Organizers say the Games are more than a sporting event, describing them as a community-building initiative that will showcase Kelowna as a host city while strengthening local sport organizations and volunteer networks.

The event is expected to generate civic pride and leave a legacy through improved community connections and experience gained by local organizers and volunteers.

Council is being asked to receive the report for information. The update is being presented by the 2026 BC Summer Games Host Society.
