Games Facilities Get High Marks

Members of the BC Games Society have toured the venues for the 55 + Games in Vernon this September.

Anne Haight with the local organizing committee says they were very pleased with what they saw

“When you talk to the society, they’ve been all over the province, and they think we have some tremendous facilities.”

She says they were blown away by the new track and field by the college.

Haight says no major issues came up.

“No, not yet. We’re trying to make sure we’ve picked the right sports like tennis, where there’s multiple venues, tennis and soccer were the ones we’ll have to make some decisions on, but otherwise everything’s pretty much set.”

The only issues for soccer and tennis are which sites to use when it rains.

After looking at the sites, they talked a bit about issues such as transportation.

“Any sort of thoughts that we thought would be concerns were brought up then, but there was nothing that came up that was felt, this is a show stopper.”

Venues in Armstrong and Spallumcheen will be visited over the next week.

The Games are anticipated to draw up to 4,000 visitors to the North Okanagan, with an expected $2.1 million economic impact.
