New daily high for B.C. Covid cases

A new daily record was set for Covid-19 cases in B.C. Thursday, with 1,293 new cases.

That surpasses the previous high of 1,077 on April 3, and raises the overall total to 108,278.

Of the new cases, 80 are in the Interior Health region (6.2 per cent), 448 in Vancouver Coastal Health (34.6 per cent), 645 in Fraser Health (49.9 per cent), 69 in Island Health (5.3 per cent) and 51 in Northern Health (3.9 per cent).

There are 9,184 active cases, with 336 people in hospital and 101 in critical or intensive care.

Provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry reported two more deaths in last 24 hours, raising the death toll to 1,493.

On the vaccination side, 985,001 doses of the three Covid vaccines have been administered.

Henry said the province is shifting its screening strategy for variants of concern, but the methods for preventing transmission, such as handwashing and physical distancing, remain the same.

She also issued a new order allowing WorkSafeBC to issue temporary closure notices to workplaces where three or more workers are sick and transmission has been proven to have occurred in the work site.

Update on outbreaks:

  •         Cottonwoods Care Centre long-term care in Kelowna has 28 cases: 25 residents and three staff, with one death connected to the outbreak.
  •         Kelowna General Hospital unit 4E has three cases: one patient and two staff.
  •         Vernon Jubilee Hospital Level 3 surgical unit has 14 cases: 10 patients and four staff, with one death connected to the outbreak.
