Walk in the park: Vernon’s Good Citizen of Year announced

Mar 13, 2021 | 3:12 PM

A volunteer who has served many roles with many organizations has been named JCI Vernon’s Good Citizen of the Year for 2020.

As is the tradition, Joan Albert was presented with the award by surprise while she was outside at Polson Park today (Mar. 13). She was congratulated by masked members of JCI Vernon, as well as masked friends and family.

Ms. Albert was presented with a bouquet donated by Harrison Flowers, the Good Citizen of the Year Trophy, as well as a $500 donation to a charity of her choice on behalf of Kidston and Company Lawyers.

The Good Citizen of the Year Award has been handed out in Vernon for over 50 years, dating back to the 1940’s. It recognizes a specific individual and their contributions, while also highlighting the value of the contributions to the community.

“Joan stood out for her volunteer work in many roles and many organizations, such as HOPE (Helping out People Exploited), an organization that reaches out to provide blankets, clothing and food to those in need. She has also volunteered with Noric House, Mission Boutique, and the Reading Program at Alexis Park Elementary, as well as helping with a backpack drive and sending over 100 shoe boxes to developing countries,” a news release from JCI Vernon stated.

Ms. Albert is said to be an advocate for those she works with who have Alzheimers, and take a compassionate, devoted, and gracious approach in all the work she does.
