Another new record has been set for COVID-19 cases in B.C.

A statement issued by the province on Friday (Nov. 13) reported 617 new cases, breaking the record of 594 set just one day before.

There are 5,579 active cases of COVID-19 in the province and 167 people are hospitalized, 50 in critical or intensive care.

Currently, 12,016 people are under active public health monitoring as a result of identified exposure to known cases, and 14,901 people who tested positive have recovered.

“We have had 130 new cases of COVID-19 in the Vancouver Coastal Health region, 424 in the Fraser Health region, 16 in the Island Health region, 42 in the Interior Health region, five in the Northern Health region and no new cases of people who reside outside of Canada,” said Dr. Bonnie Henry, provincial health officer, in the statement.

Interior Health (IH) has 173 active cases with one person in hospital in intensive care.

IH has now gone over 1,000 total COVID-19 cases, a milestone no one is celebrating.

“It is an important reminder of how we should all focus on the precautions that protect ourselves, our loved ones and communities; especially right now as our cases are on the rise. We all need to be vigilant and consider the impacts of our decisions right now. Please stick to your household bubble; stay home when you are sick; look at alternate ways to connect with those outside your bubble. When the Interior saw increases in past, such as on Canada Day weekend, we collectively stepped up to bring down the curve and I am confident we can do it again. Please continue to follow public health guidance and encourage your families and friends to do the same. This is a challenging time for everyone – together, we will get through it,” stated Dr. Albert De. Villiers, chief medical health officer, Interior Health.

There have been two new COVID-related deaths in B.C., for a total of 290.

There are three new health-care facility outbreaks at Sun Pointe Village, Capilano Care Centre and Fraserview Intermediate Care Lodge. The outbreaks at Queens Park Hospital, Lakeview Care Centre, Yaletown House and St. Michael’s Centre are now over. In total, 35 long-term care or assisted-living facilities and six acute-care facilities have active outbreaks.

There have been no new community outbreaks.

Dr. Henry said this is a critical time for everyone in the province.

“We need to act now to protect our loved ones, our Elders and our communities.”

She urged residents to follow the health orders and use their layers of protection.

“This weekend, we encourage everyone to have a safe start to Diwali celebrations by staying home, limiting your travel and connecting virtually instead. Now is the time for everyone, right across our province, to do their part to slow the spread of COVID-19 – to be leaders by working together with a common purpose to push our curve back down.”
