It was another fairly busy weekend for new COVID-19 cases in British Columbia.

Dr. Bonnie Henry, provincial health officer, announced 499 new cases on Monday, with 172 from Friday to Saturday, 153 from Saturday to Sunday and 174 from Sunday to Monday.

The province’s overall total is now 11,687 cases.

Interior Health’s total is 611 cases, up 21 from Friday.

There are 36 active cases in IH with two people in hospital and one person in intensive care.

There are 1,639 active cases, with 67 people in hospital and 19 in critical or intensive care.

There are two new deaths, one in Fraser Health and one in Vancouver Coastal, for a provincial total of 253.

Currently 4,028 people are under active monitoring after exposure to known COVID cases and 9,753 people have recovered.

There are four new health care outbreaks and one new community outbreak at J and L Beef Ltd. in the Fraser Region.

“One can say we are in our second wave, but we have control over what that wave looks like and we have shown we can do that,” said Henry. “We are not seeing exponential growth. We have more people in hospital than a few weeks ago, but that has stabilized. What we are seeing is continued, ongoing growth, particularly in hot spots like the Lower Mainland.”

Henry said the vast majority of B.C. residents are taking it seriously and following the health guidelines.

Case counts by health region:

  • Vancouver Coastal 4,146 (+110)
  • Fraser 6,244 (+360)
  • Island 243 (+3)
  • Interior 611 (+21)
  • Northern 355 (+5)
  • people who reside outside Canada 88 (-1 due to data correction)
