COVID-19 case counts increase in B.C., officials ‘concerned’

Aug 7, 2020 | 3:39 PM

COVID-19 cases are on the rise in B.C. with 53 new infections since Thursday, including four in Interior Health.

The number of active cases is now at 386, with 11 people in hospital, but fortunately no new COVID-related deaths (total still at 195).

More than 1,500 people throughout the province are currently self-isolating because they have COVID-19 or have had a high-risk exposure to the virus.

“This is a concern and something we can change,” said a statement issued Friday by Dr. Bonnie Henry, provincial health officer, and Health Minister Adrian Dix.

“As we see new COVID-19 hot spots emerge and the new cases creep up in every health authority, we have to keep our firewall strong. Like a wildfire, COVID-19 has the potential to rapidly burn out of control and we need to put out these flare-ups.”

Henry and Dix are calling on everyone to make COVID-19 safety our way of life — this weekend and every weekend.

“Now is not the time to relax and let down our guard. Let’s keep our bubbles small, use our layers of protection and give people the space to stay safe.”

There has been one new healthcare facility outbreak at Derby Manor in the Fraser Health region. In total, five long-term care or assisted-living facilities and one acute-care facility have active outbreaks.

There are no new community outbreaks but there continues to be community exposure events and on flights into and out of British Columbia.

“Alerts are posted on the BC Centre for Disease Control’s website, as well as on health authorities’ websites, providing details on where the potential exposure occurred and what actions you need to take — whether you need to immediately self-isolate, or monitor for symptoms,” the health officials said.

Case counts by region:

  • 1,167 Vancouver Coastal
  • 2,069 Fraser Health
  • 147 Island Health
  • 389 Interior Health
  • 93 Northern Health
  • 69 cases of people who reside outside of Canada.
  • 3,353 people who tested positive have recovered
