A home in Lumby sustained extensive damage from a fire Wednesday night.

The village’s Fire Chief Tony Clayton, said the top floor of the house on Skyview Crescent was fully involved when crews arrived around 11:30 p.m., but all the family members managed to exit.

“It was three storeys, and the top is pretty much gone, so extensive damage,” Clayton told Vernon Matters.

He said the building is no longer structurally sound to live in.

“The roof is not stable,” he said.

Crews were were able to knock down the flames and keep it from spreading to nearby homes.

“It was real close proximity to neighbouring houses. It was always a concern, but it wasnt a major threat,” Clayton said.

The fire chief said the neighbours were using their garden hoses to wet down the area when the fire department arrived.

The cause is under investigation, but Clayton stated there is no reason to think it’s suspicious at this point.

The family was insured and is staying with friends.

Eleven firefighters from Lumby and five from Lavington responded to the blaze which produced a lot of smoke.
