B.C. COVID-19 Update: 41 new cases, no new in IH

Jul 29, 2020 | 4:42 PM

British Columbia is reporting 41 new COVID-19 cases, with 31 of those in the Fraser Health region due to an outbreak at a blueberry packing plant in Abbotsford.

Officials say there are are no health concerns related to the consumption of fruit from Fraser Valley Packers, but people are reminded to always wash fruit and vegetables before eating them.

The number of cases in the Interior Health region actually decreased by two due to a “data correction,” and there have been no new COVID-related deaths (194 total).

Interior Health (IH) confirmed there have been no new cases since Tuesday.

An alert remains in place for community exposure for anyone who was at the Liquid Zoo night club in Kelowna from July 15 to 18.

There are no new cases at Kelowna General Hospital, and there are no hospitalized cases currently in Interior Health.

Until now, Interior Health has defined the number of cases associated with what it called the Kelowna cluster to cases connected directly to specific events and businesses downtown in early July and over the Canada Day holiday.

IH says the situation has shifted into more broad community transmission beyond the initial cases in downtown Kelowna.

For this reason, IH medial health officers will begin reporting the number of cases occurring across Kelowna, not just cases associated with the early July events.

IH said the new reporting will more accurately reflect what is happening in the city and region at this time.

Provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry and Health Minister Adrian Dix will explain the change during their regular media availability Thursday and IH will begin releasing numbers based on the expanded definition.

This will mean a significant increase in the cluster number IH has been reporting to date. It is important to clarify that the vast majority of the additional cases reported will not be new cases. These are cases that were already captured in the IH total cases, but were not officially assigned to the “Kelowna cluster.”

There are 259 active cases of COVID-19 in the province and, of those, six people are hospitalized, two of whom are in intensive care.

Global News said the number of hospitalized COVID patients is the lowest in B.C. since mid-March.

There have been no new health care facility outbreaks and the outbreak at St. Paul’s Hospital neonatal intensive care unit has now been declared over. In total, one long-term care facility and one acute-care facility have active outbreaks.

There are no new community outbreaks. Currently, there are 20 cases on Haida Gwaii and 31 cases connected to Fraser Valley Packers.

There continues to be additional community exposure events throughout the province. An alert has been issued for Liquid Zoo in Kelowna. Anyone who may have been at the night club from July 15 to 18 is asked to monitor themselves closely, limit their contact with others and contact 811 to get tested, if symptoms develop.

A full listing of community exposure events related to flights and others within each health authority is available through the BC Centre for Disease Control, as well as on health authority websites.

“To play safe and stay safe this weekend, and protect all of our communities from COVID-19, we all need to use the layers of protection we have available and keep your groups small” a statement from Dr. Bonnie Henry and Adrian Dix said.

“Staying a safe distance from others is the best way to slow the spread of the virus. If you are in a crowded area, outside or inside, and you can’t maintain a safe physical distance, wearing a mask is a further protective layer.”

People are also reminded to wash hands regularly, clean surfaces more often, follow one-way pathways and always, without exception, stay home if you feel ill.

Case counts by health region:

  • 1,071 Vancouver Coastal Health
  • 1,846 Fraser Health
  • 143 in Island Health
  • 356 in Interior Health
  • 86 in Northern Health
  • 60 cases of people who reside outside of Canada.
