Don’t fall victim to phone scam, say cops

Police are warning of an elaborate telephone fraud circulating in the North Okanagan that involves a fraudster claiming to be a federal agent or RCMP officer.

Over the past month, the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP detachment has received numerous calls from the public about the scam, police say.

“The fraudster advises the victim there are criminal charges against them or warrants for their arrest,” says Cpl. Tania Finn, Vernon RCMP spokesperson. “The fraudster then convinces the victim to send money through Bitcoin or gift cards.

“What makes this call feel real to the victims is that the fraudster already has some of their personal information.”

Finn says some victims believe the caller is an officer because their caller ID on the telephone display shows Vernon RCMP Detachment.

“The Vernon North Okanagan RCMP want to remind the public that telephone fraud exists and that they need to protect themselves from falling victim to this type of crime.”

Police advise residents to never give out personal information on unsolicited calls.

“The RCMP will never ask the public to transfer funds nor will any legitimate business or government agency ask for payment in the form of Bitcoin or gift cards.”

Most importantly, Finn says don’t be afraid to say no or hang up on a call that you believe is a scam.
