Park closed to vehicle traffic

June goes out on a wet note

Jun 30, 2020 | 2:24 PM

There is a good chance of some localized flooding as a storm packing a punch made its way through the Vernon area Tuesday afternoon.

The storm dropped heavy rain and some hail, drenching people caught on the street and creating water pooling issues for drivers.

The construction site on one block of 32nd Avenue downtown looked like a small lake.

“[There] is a huge puddle on Hwy 6 above Polson Mall at exit to 27th [Street],” said one person who contacted Beach Radio. “It covers the exit lane and right lane heading into town.”

The city of Vernon has closed Polson Park to vehicle traffic due to flooding, but it remains accessible for pedestrians and cyclists.

The public is asked to stay off the turf and away from the water and creek banks.

City crews have closed a portion of the road at 24th Avenue and 34A Street due to localized flooding in that area. Crews are now checking manhole covers across the city that may have moved during the heavy rain event.

Motorists are asked to slow down while traveling, as various streets may be experiencing flooding where the storm sewer system has been temporarily overwhelmed.

June is traditionally one of the wettest months of the year in the area.

Environment Canada said Vernon has received just over 54 millimetres of rain this month, not including today.

Canada Day Wednesday and Thursday July 2 are also expected to be wet, according to Vernon’s forecast.
