Vernon council will hold a second public hearing this fall on an application to remove some of the protections for the Great Blue Heron rookery.

Scotland Construction is looking to lift a restriction covenant put in to protect the birds during the breeding season

The application is part of the company’s proposal for a low-rise apartment building at 5000 20th Street.

After opposition from the Vernon Heronry Protection Society, council voted earlier to defer the matter under another public hearing is held.

The hearing will be held Sept. 14 at the Vernon Recreation Centre.

“We decided not to do it in the summer. We didn’t want to be seen as doing it when people couldn’t attend so wanted it at a time when people could attend,” said Mayor Victor Cumming.
