Heavy rains over the weekend led to a significant increase in Shuswap River levels.

The rainfall is expected to make its way through the drainage system over the next few days. The City of Enderby says the river is forecast to hit its second, smaller, peak on Tuesday (June 16) and then resume its downward trend. The June 16 peak will not be as high as the peak on June 5.

“The Shuswap River flow rate is currently 419 cubic metres per second and has a level of 4.70 metres. By way of comparison, on June 5, flow rates were 459 cubic metres per second and levels were 4.920 metres. On June 11, flow rates were 336 cubic metres per second and levels were 4.25 metres,” said a city news release.

The BC River Forecast Centre is continuing to maintain a High Streamflow Advisory for the Shuswap River, as flooding at low-lying levels is occurring.

The group Shuswap River Ambassadors said on its Facebook page, the river has gone up 11 inches (almost 28 centimetres) in the past five days.

Riverdale Drive in Enderby is again closed except for local traffic.

“Please do not go past the barricades unless you live in the area. If you must drive through a submerged area to access your property, please lower your speeds to reduce your wake, out of respect to adjacent property owners,” said the city news release.

Waterwheel Street remains closed past the residential area and the Kildonan Avenue boat launch also remains closed.

The public is advised to stay clear of rivers and potentially unstable riverbanks during the high-streamflow period.

“If your property is or may become at-risk of flooding, please take appropriate measures to protect it. Sand and sandbags are available for free at the Public Works Yard at 2308 McGowan Avenue – please bring your own shovel,” the release added.
