RDNO delays food scraps ban

May 25, 2020 | 2:31 PM

A local environmental initiative has gone down the toilet due to the COVID-19 pandemic, at least in the short term.

The North Okanagan Regional District has delayed the implementation of the food scraps ban for industrial, commercial and institutional organizations by six months to provide relief to North Okanagan businesses during the pandemic.

The decision was given a stamp of approval by the board of directors.

Diverting food scraps from landfills can reduce greenhouse gas emissions and be used for compost, the district’s press release said.

“While this is an important initiative to keep unnecessary waste out of our landfills, we acknowledge that businesses are facing complicated challenges from COVID-19,” RDNO Chair Kevin Acton said. “We hope this will be one less thing to worry about in the short term as we all adjust to the new normal.”
