Thief nabbed after running out of gas

May 25, 2020 | 9:28 AM

An unlucky thief stole a pickup from a residence in Coldstream last Friday morning but ran out of gas before he could escape from the law.

Police were alerted to the incident around 3 a.m. on May 22 after the owner woke up to the sound of the truck starting.

While officers rushed to the area, the driver fled in the stolen vehicle along Highway 6 and they were unable to find it.

“The truck’s owner advised police the vehicle had very little fuel and probably wouldn’t make it too far before running out of gas,” RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Tania Finn said.

At 10:30 a.m., more than seven hours after the pickup was stolen, the truck’s owner decided to drive up King Edward Forest Service Road to see if the vehicle was abandoned.

The owner found the vehicle on the side of the road with a man sitting in the driver’s seat.

He alerted police.

“With the assistance of our police dog services, frontline officers surrounded the vehicle,” Finn said. “One man was taken into custody without incident.”

A 40-year-old Nakusp man was charged with possession of stolen property over $5,000 and possession of break-in instruments.

He appeared before a justice of the peace and was released from custody on 11 conditions pending his next court date, Finn said.
