Citizens gather at beach for clean-up

May 21, 2020 | 5:12 AM

People will be showing-up at Vernon’s Kin Beach this weekend with shovels and rakes in hand.

They will be taking part in a clean-up of the beach which was initiated on social media by a posting from Katie Mather, a resident of the Armstrong area.

She was able to round-up volunteers to help after saying she was “shocked and saddened” to see things like furniture and discarded drug needles and paraphernalia at the beach during a recent visit.

“We have one truck. There is a pile of couches and furniture at the beach so if we could have a few hands and trucks to help us to the dump we would be so grateful,” wrote Mather.

The clean-up will go from 9 to 11 Saturday morning.

The City of Vernon is responsible for maintaining the city-owned portion of the beach while the Okanagan Indian Band looks after the eastern part known as Sandy Beach which is where there has been issues in the past

Mather said she has contacted OKIB and RDNO about the work.

“There will be a preamble before we start to cover some safety concerns that are at hand as well as what our priority will be. Please bring your own gloves if you can. I will have bags and some tools (shovels, rakes, wheelbarrow etc.) the more you can bring the better. The preamble will begin at 8:45 a.m. It will take place by the stream that runs into the lake. I would like to thank everyone in advance for the dedication you show to our beautiful community. I am looking forward to seeing everyone Saturday!!!”
