$4.7 million in spending cuts

City projects $5.6 million revenue loss from Covid

The City of Vernon is projecting a 5.6 million dollar revenue hit from the Covid pandemic.

That includes the expected loss of revenue until this October from building permits, parking fees, a casino grant, and other sources.

Mayor Victor Cumming says 4.7 million dollars in spending will be cut.

“That’s mainly around reducing all things we can possibly reduce, like staff travel and positions that are vacant will not be filled during this period. That’s mainly what we’ve done, to just reduce where we can reduce without harming service levels,” Cumming told Vernon Matters.

The rest of the funds — about $831,000 — will come from reserves.

“One of the strengths of the City of Vernon is we have carried reserves for these difficult periods — and this is a difficult period — so we will draw from reserves,” Cumming added.
