Aimed at reducing fatal overdoses

Council gets update on overdose prevention site

May 11, 2020 | 5:10 AM

Vernon council will get an update today on plans for an overdose prevention site in the city.

Representatives from Interior Health will make a presentation at council’s meeting this afternoon.

Colleen McEwan, director clinical operations – mental health & substance use and allied health, North Okanagan and Dr. Karin Goodison, Interior medical health officer, are scheduled to make the presentation to council.

At last report, the health agency was seeking interest from groups to operate the facility at a yet to be decided location.

A petition with several hundred names a year ago called for the site to be outside of the downtown business area, with one suggestion to have it at Vernon Jubilee Hospital

The facility would allow people to use drugs in a safe, supervised setting to reduce overdose fatalities.
