'Stay strong'

Mayor issues Mother’s Day statement

Vernon’s mayor is encouraging people to consider new ways to honour and celebrate their moms this Mother’s Day.

Victor Cumming said in a statement issued by the city, it’s important to maintain physical distancing to protect everyone’s health.

“Mother’s Day may look different for many of us this year,” Cumming said. “I know it may be difficult if you have to be apart from loved ones, but I encourage you to stay strong. During this time that we have to stay apart, consider new ways you can connect to mark this special day.”

Cumming said along with video chats, phone calls and emails, people can also mark the special day with drive-by parades, leaving a gift on the front step, or sharing greetings at a safe distance in their front yard.

“These are all great ways for us to stay apart, but stay connected during a unique and unusual time,” he said.

The first-term mayor said the big story in B.C. this week about the plans to reopen the economy was “good news.” The strategy will be rolled-out in phases over the next few months.

“The steps will be slow and deliberate,” Cumming said. “We must follow the thoughtful approach laid out by our Provincial Health Officer so we don’t unravel all the good work we’ve done.”

“So this Mother’s Day, we will continue to keep our distances but we will also say ‘thank you.’ Mothers, we appreciate and honour you, and continue to stand alongside you, as we all take the necessary steps to protect each other’s health and safety as we move forward together,” Cumming said.
