Coldstream Creek rising, says forecast centre

May 4, 2020 | 12:37 PM

The BC River Forecast Centre has issued a high streamflow advisory for the North Okanagan, including tributaries around Vernon, Lumby and Winfield.

A similar advisory remains in effect for the Salmon River near Salmon Arm.

The centre says snowmelt runoff has been contributing to rising flows in most areas over the past week or two.

There has also been significant rainfall.

This includes:

  • Salmon River at Falkland is flowing at 28 m3/s (2-year and 5-year flow) and is experiencing a rise in flows since yesterday
  • Coldstream Creek above municipal intake is flowing at 4.8 m3/s (10-year to 20-year flow) and rising

“A low-pressure system continues to impact British Columbia today, with the potential for some showers through the region and cooler temperatures,” says the forecast centre. “Snowpack in mid-elevations (1400-1500m) and above is expected to continue to fuel on-going rises in river levels through next week.”

The public is advised to stay clear of the fast-flowing rivers and potentially unstable riverbanks during the high streamflow period.

A high streamflow advisory means river levels are rising or expected to rise rapidly, but that no major flooding is expected.

Minor flooding in low-lying areas is possible.

Coldstream Creek flows south from Silver Star Provincial Park and discharges into Kalamalka Lake.
