Businesses having trouble paying their rent due to the COVID outbreak, are getting help from the federal government — and their landlords.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has introduced emergency commercial rent assistance to lower rent by 75 per cent for small and medium businesses for April, May and June.

The government will cover 50 per cent of the reduction, with the property owner covering the rest.

Businesses paying less than $50,000 a month in rent, will be eligible.

The PM said the money will get to businesses “as soon as possible.”

Trudeau also said he’ll be talking to the premiers later today about a plan to gradually reopen the economy, but he says it’s vital for everyone to keep following the public health orders to stay home as much as possible, washing youd hands regularly and keeping a two metre distance from others..

“I want to be clear that getting back to normal will not happen overnight. It’s going to take time. We will be working with the provinces and territories to establish principles and guidelines to start reopening the economy safely,” said Trudeau.

Trudeau started off his address by mentioning there will be a moment of silence for the Nova Scotia victims at 10 a.m. B.C. time and a virtual vigil starting at 3 p.m. B.C. time. (NovaScotiaRemembers.com)

“Lets come together to support these communities who suffered immeasurable loss. Let’s celebrate the lives of those who left us too soon.”
