Society grateful for computer donation from Vernon library

An act of kindness will allow people experiencing homelessness in Vernon to stay connected during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Vernon branch of the Okanagan Regional Library has donated three computers to Turning Points Collaborative Society, to be used at its temporary, amalgamated shelter located at the Vernon Curling Club.

The need for these computers at the temporary shelter was identified by staff as a way for clients to stay connected to friends, family and loved ones during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We are incredibly grateful to the library for this donation,” said Turning Points Collaborative Society, executive director, Randene Wejr. “These computers will provide a valuable resource for our clients who are self-isolating.”

Turning Points and the Vernon library have a history of partnering on various community initiatives; a partnership that continues to thrive even during these difficult times.

“One of the library’s most important roles is as a safe space for everyone in the community to gather, learn, and connect,” said Vernon library branch head, Kristy Hennings. “With this current crisis, we are no longer able to support our community as a physical place or with access to the internet. This leaves a huge gap in service for many people, and we are happy to share our extra resources with Turning Points to ease some of that disconnection.”

The partnership with the Vernon library is one of many community partnerships that continue to provide life’s comforts and necessities to Turning Points’ clients during the COVID-19 pandemic.

From the seamstresses who made and donated cotton masks for staff and clients, to the local businesses who helped with bedding, playing cards and TVs, the community has shown immense generosity during these difficult times. To the community, the society is offering heartfelt thanks.

“We are really fortunate to have such a caring and compassionate community,” said Wejr. “Together, through these partnerships, we are making Vernon a safer and healthier place for everyone. Thank you.”
