The latest survey has found 144 homeless residents in Vernon.
That’s a combination of people in local shelters, Bill’s Place (substance abuse care) who identified themselves as homeless, the Women’s Transition House, and in homeless camps.
The survey was conducted in mid-October by the Social Planning Council and John Howard Society, members of Partners in Action.
Seventy-three percent were male, and 23 percent female.
The average age for those sleeping outside was around 40.
The agencies say the main causes of homelessness in Vernon are low income and high rents.
“This was the overwhelming response by survey participants, and is supported by local data and community indicators,” states the report.
The report urges community members to educate themselves on the causes of homelessness and the true cost to the taxpayer.
“It costs the taxpayer $55,000 per year to ignore homelessness due to increased costs to health care and the criminal justice system,” says the report.
The agencies say more income assistance and supportive housing projects, would help the situation.
The groups will present their report to city council on Monday morning.
