Shots fired by police under investigation

Dec 22, 2019 | 8:46 PM

RCMP have notified the Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia (IIO BC) of a shots fired incident in Kelowna which has resulted in injuries to one man.

Just after midnight on December 22, a Central Okanagan Traffic Services officer was attempting to conduct a traffic stop, on a dead end roadway near Highland Drive and Glenmore Road in Kelowna.

The driver had allegedly failed to stop for the officer and had been pursued to the area. An interaction occurred between the officer and the driver which led to shots being fired by police. The driver continued but was later admitted to a local area hospital with what are believed to be non-life threatening gunshot injuries. He has been arrested but remains in hospital.

The Kelowna RCMP is investigating the criminal code and driving offences while the IIO BC is now investigating to determine whether police actions or inactions are linked to the man’s injuries. As the matter is now under investigation by the IIO BC, no further information will be released by police.
