Kelowna crews respond to house fire and separate grass fire

Firefighters were called to two separate incidents Tuesday evening, including a residential structure fire and a small grass fire in a city park.

The Kelowna Regional Fire Dispatch Centre received multiple reports shortly after 5:30 p.m. of a house fire in the 1200 block of Elwyn Road.

Crews arrived to find smoke and flames coming through the roof of a two-storey home. Firefighters attacked the blaze using multiple hose lines and a master stream. No one was home at the time of the fire. Emergency Support Services assisted the displaced residents with temporary accommodation.

The fire took several hours to bring under control, with the home sustaining heavy damage. The cause remains under investigation.

While crews were still working at that scene, a second fire was reported around 7:30 p.m. in a park area off Chilcotin Crescent in the Dilworth area. Firefighters arrived to find a small grass fire measuring roughly 50 feet by 50 feet, which was quickly extinguished using a bush truck.

No injuries were reported in either incident.

Officials say the second fire is being treated as suspicious and remains under investigation.
