Wildfire Risks

Okanagan’s Fire Danger Rating already up to Moderate

Apr 23, 2026 | 2:49 PM

The Okanagan and Southern Interior are already seeing risks of wildfires.

The B.C. Wildfire Service said the Okanagan had a Moderate Fire Risk rating as of Thursday, April 23.

The provincial firefighting agency said a Moderate rating indicated that “forest fuels are drying and there is an increased risk of surface fires starting. Carry out any forest activities with caution.”

There were two pockets of High Fire Risks near Penticton and Osoyoos, which meant forest fuels there were very dry and that fires could easily start, burn vigorously, and challenge suppression efforts.

Additionally, an Extreme Fire Risk rating was given for the Merritt area, which indicated extremely dry fuels that could see fires start easily and spread rapidly, also leading to challenges for crews to contain and extinguish the flames.

As of Thursday, the City of Vernon had its Fire Hazard Rating at Low.
