BC’s school system will get a 150-million dollar funding increase after the province struck a deal with teachers to restore contract language and smaller class sizes.
Education Minister Mike Bernier says the new money is in addition to the funding in this year’s budget, bringing the total to $330 million.
“It works out to about 2,600 new teachers in the province of BC. We will be looking at filling these positions,” says Bernier.
Bernier says they are reaching out to other areas of Canada to recruit teachers.
“We’ve started advertising to look at opportunities to bring people into British Columbia.”
Friday’s announcement will mean the hiring of about 1,500 new teachers, in addition to the 1,000 already announced in the budget.
