Decision appealed

Knights docked four wins for using ineligible player

The North Okanagan Knights have been forced to forfeit four wins this season, after the KIJHL team was found to be entangled in a carding error.

The KIJHL and B.C. Hockey require all players to be properly carded and approved before they hit the ice.

“The league completed a two-week investigation on an ineligible player. It was a carding error done by the North Okanagan Knights,” Emanuel Sequeira, communications manager for the KIJHL, said.

The league spokesperson was not able to say how the error occurred, but Vernon Matters has learned the player at the centre of the carding error played games in September and October of this season and the league became aware of the error “in the last few weeks.”

Hockey Canada completed an investigation to see if there was an error on their end, but no error was found, according to Sequeira.

The team has appealed the decision, and a decision by the league commissioner is expected to be released Friday.

Prior to the carding error, the team was at the top of the standings in their division with 17 points. They have since dropped to the third spot with nine points.

Vernon Matters has reached out to Hockey Canada and the president of the North Okanagan Knights for comment.
