Vipers break out of scoring drought

It didnt take long for the Vernon Vipers to end their scoreless drought against the Merritt Centennials.

After getting held off the scoresheet the last three games, the Vipers stormed out of the gate Friday night, getting a goal from Keigo Hachisuka 53 seconds into the game, en route to a 5-2 win at Kal Tire Place.

Ryan Shostak added two goals and Brendan Kim had three assists for Vernon who snapped a four game losing skid against the last place Cents before 1,964 fans.

The game’s start time was delayed by over an hour due to issues with the Centennials bus in getting to Vernon.

The Vipers had to make a change in goal as Max Palaga got banged up in a first period collision.

Newly acquired goalie Reilly Herbst, formerly of the USHL’s Chicago Steel, was brought in and shut the door the rest of the way as Vernon outshot its opponents 34-25.

The Vipers host the Chilliwack Chiefs Saturday at 6 p.m., 5:45 pre game on 107.5 Beach Radio.

Another BCHL game of note Friday saw the Penticton Vees improve to 11-0 with a 6-2 road win over the Powell River Kings.

Salmon Arm defeated Chilliwack 2-1 in overtime.

In the WHL, Kelowna Rockets thumped the Seattle Thunderbirds 8-3 and in the KIJHL, the North Okanagan knights defeated Summerland 3-1.
